Interview with Adrian Smith

on February 8, 2009 @ 01:12

The Times of India has posted an interview with Adrian Smith:

"Ask heavy metal fans the two words they love and they'll tell you Iron Maiden. The iconic UK-based band from the '80s will
treat Bangalore to some classic head-banging music on February 15 as part of a rock festival organized by DNA Networks. On Friday, Maiden's legendary guitarist Adrian Smith spoke to TOI from UK.

Iron Maiden is back. You love Indian fans, don't you?

They are amazing. They know all our songs and sing all our classics. They understand what we're doing. No wonder we're back.

What's kept the band together for 30 years?

The fact that we rock non-stop. We're a family. There are differences, but there's the chemistry.

How has Maiden maintained its unique sound over the years?

We don't follow trends, we play true to ourselves.

How is the Maiden sound different?

Our music is melodic. Pretty and quiet along with the heavy. It's a quiet you'll remember. Powerful but not easy to bring about.

Heavy metal music of your time and now; what's new?

Metal has changed beyond recognition. When I was 18, I couldn't think of records. You carried your own equipment, you slept with it. You had a few clubs. Kids now have records at 18 and they've studios at home! Their exposure to rock is massive. There is talent, and opportunity is certainly more.

You're a frontline guitarist. What's your take on younger guitarists?

For many the guitar is an instrument of pure aggression rather than melody. There's a place for aggression but melody should contrast it. Like I said, you'll remember the quiet.

Which guitarists were exceptional?

Steve Vai, Satriani, Jimi Hendrix... stuff of genius.

Ever wanted to be anyone else other than Adrian Smith?

I dreamt of doing rock. I'm one of those lucky to do what they like to.

Has age mellowed you?

Not really. You get philosophical all right, but once on stage, I'm a kid. I'm carefree."
