More on the New Album

Bravewords.com reports:

Bruce Dickinson spoke with Rollingstone.com recently about a number of topics. When asked what's next for Maiden?

"At the moment we're in daydreaming mode", says Dickinson. "We're trying to get ideas and things, but towards the end of the year we're going to get together to plan our new record. We haven't made any tour plans for next tour. That's at least a year and a bit away."

The group will probably have a more balanced set list on the next tour. "My gut feeling is that we'll play selected songs from the new album and a mixture of stuff from several albums we haven't picked from yet - like Brave New World and some of the other more recent albums."

Blaze Keeps the Fire Burning

Recently, Express & Star spoke to Blaze Bayley:

"When former Iron Maiden singer Blaze Bayley stands on a stage in front of his fans the person who did the most to get him back there can't share the moment.

His wife, Debbie, who helped him get back on track after his career hit the rocks, died last September.

After finding fame with first Wolfsbane and then Iron Maiden, Blaze, who now lives in Dudley, found himself on his own again in 1999 when he was ousted from Maiden so that singer Bruce Dickinson could return.

Now touring again with his band, also called Blaze Bayley, the singer credits Debbie with rescuing him after he had all but given up on his rock dreams and settled for a shop job..."

Flight 666 Chart Positions

Following on from the hugely successful screening of Iron Maiden's award-winning film Flight 666 in over 500 digital cinemas in 42 countries worldwide in April, the recent release of "Flight 666" on DVD has secured another global triumph for the band by flying into the music DVD charts at Number One in 22 countries already, including the USA and UK , with many more charts yet to come in!!!

In the USA it was not only No.1 debut but also the highest selling first week sales of any music DVD so far in 2009! This release closely followed the US TV Premiere of the movie on Palladia/VH1 which was watched by over three million people, the highest viewing of a music documentary on the channel so far this year

In Canada it rocketed into the No.1 position outselling the No.2 DVD by over 6:1

In the UK, first day's sales were over twice the total combined sales of every other DVD in the Top 50!!

In Sweden Flight 666 is currently at #1, #3 and #4 on Sweden's leading online retailer Discshop chart with the deluxe, standard and Blu-ray formats respectively!

In Australia it not only debuted at No.1 but was certified Platinum within its second week of release.

In India, as well as being the No.1 music DVD, it entered at No.6 in the mainstream DVD movie chart, placing it that week ahead of such international blockbusters as "Slumdog Millionaire" and many Bollywood movies!

In Brazil, where 70% of the market is dominated by local repertoire, it debuted at No.3 in their national chart and is fully expected to reach No.1 by next week. It was a new entry at No.1 in Brazil's International chart.

Once again No.1 in Arabia.

The countries in the five continents where Flight 666 flew in at No.1 were Australia, Arabia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil int, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan int, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, UK and the USA. Elsewhere in the world it entered at No.2 in Spain and Portugal, and at No.3 in France and Hungary, and No4 in Holland. With more charts still to come from many other Latin American territories who will release the DVD this week, well over 30 countries are expected to achieve No.1 for Flight 666.

And after four weeks of sales in Europe, Flight 666 is still holding strong at No.1 in Germany, Sweden, Finland, Switzerland, Norway and Italy, making this Iron Maiden's most successful DVD release to date and proving yet again the unswerving, ever-growing support of Maiden fans young and old, from every corner of the globe, and the unstoppable resurgence of Heavy Metal.

Maiden Are Metal Hammer Golden Gods

Last night at a typically alcohol-soaked Metal Hammer Awards at the IndigO2 in East London, Maiden were presented with awards for Best British Band and Golden Gods, the latter partly in honour of having a liver that can withstand the continual onslaught of alcoholic beverages fired from every direction! Trivium's Matt Heafy and Scott Ian of Anthrax presented the award. With three of Maiden out of the country, the awards were collected by Bruce, Janick and Nicko. The party continued on until the very early hours at the Embassy Club in the West End where the guys were able to catch up with the likes of Anthrax, Trivium, Anvil, Bring Me The Horizon, Saxon and other stalwarts of the Metal World.

Nicko was largely unable to speak this morning but was heard to mutter : "thanks to all you Metal Hammer readers who voted for us - it's much appreciated - and to Chris, Alex and all our friends there, it really was quite a night!!"

Pilots Need 12 Hour Breaks Between Rocking and Flying

3news.co.nz is reporting:

"Flight bosses banned qualified pilot and Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson from flying his band around on tour last year, fearing performing would leave him too tired.

The band took a personalised Boeing 757 - dubbed Ed Force 1 - on their Somewhere Back in Time tour.

Dickinson, who flies for a commercial airline in his spare time, hoped to be behind the controls the whole way, as Iron Maiden took in 13 countries in five continents in just 45 days.

But officials at the British Civil Aviation Authority forced him to take a 12-hour break between rocking and flying, meaning the band and their entourage had to rely on a co-pilot for many of the flights.

Although Dickinson was disappointed, many of his crew were relieved.

Bandmate Nicko McBrain says: "Some of the road crew were like, 'What? After running around onstage, he is going to fly us back?'""

Bruce Talks About Ed Force 1 - "It Is the World's Biggest Bus"

Bruce Dickinson spoke with Darryl Sterdan from Sun Media recently about a number of topics including the band's new movie, Flight 666. A few excerpts from the chat follow:

Sun Media: You're raising the bar here - plenty of musicians drive the van and a few drive the bus, but you don't see anybody else flying the plane.

Dickinson: "(Laughs). Well, it is a bus, really. It is the world's biggest bus."

Sun Media: Flying every day and playing every night seems like a heck of a schedule.

Dickinson: "Well, it would be if I did that. The documentary might give that impression, but that's just something people have read into it. If we did an aviation documentary, you'd see how it actually works. I'm not allowed to fly after doing a show - I have to wait 12 hours. That's a regulatory issue. So when you see me flying, we've had a rest day after the show and then left the next day. And at all times on the airplane, we had three pilots as an insurance policy against one getting sick. In fact, one did get food poisoning and I had to take over. If they'd shown that, you'd have seen me flying in shorts and a t-shirt."

Sun Media: Speaking of clothing, I found it curious that you're always wearing a pilot's uniform when you're flying. Why? Couldn't you wear whatever you want when you're chartering the plane?

Dickinson: "Well, we were chartering the plane, sure. But I also work for the airline."

Sun Media: Wait, you were chartering the flight AND working for the airline? So you were getting paid to fly yourself on tour?

Dickinson: "I guess I probably was! Hey, that's not bad, is it? (Laughs)"

Sun Media: You're getting it from both ends.

Dickinson: "And if you can get it from both ends, you should! (Laughs)"

Sun Media: Are there similarities between being a pilot and being a rock singer?

Dickinson: "Well, the image of the pilot is somebody who is always in control. And the image of a rock star is somebody who is always out of control. The truth is, as a pilot, you're not as in control as some people think. You're constantly managing risk. Doesn't mean the airplane's not safe; but the amount of control you have over nature is not absolute. Now flip to your rock-star head and you're running around on stage salivating like a maniac, yelling, screaming, snarling. But in fact, the show is quite tightly controlled. If it weren't disciplined, the band would fall apart. So the appearances are different. But under the surface, they're not so different. A pilot has to be aware of his environment and all the things that might affect the airplane. As a singer, you're juggling the audience's emotions and you've got to be aware of all the things that might affect that evening's proceedings."

Nicko: "We Start Working on a New Record in November"

Nicko McBrain spoke with Kory Grow from Revolvermag.com recently about a number of topics including the band's new documentary, Flight 666 and the band's new album. A few excerpts from the chat follow:

Revolvermag.com: Iron Maiden have done so many concert films, documentaries, and music-video DVDs over the years. Other than the jet, what makes Flight 666 special for you?

McBrain: "It's a bit of the agony and the ecstasy on this one. It was the first time that we had had 24-7 cameras with us. Not just filming the backstage stuff and the concert; it was filming us going to work and coming from work, while we're at work, and then when we're not working. We were always a very private band. We never were and we still aren't a band that would chase the limelight, chase the paparazzi. We steer clear of places where we knew people would be at to take photographs for OK magazine. When you look at the film...they had 500 hours worth of film to edit from. And there's a lot of it [laughs] that are those sort of things that you didn't want people to see that's on the cutting-room floor. They did a fantastic job."

Revolvermag.com: One thing that stood out in the video was, do you play barefoot?

McBrain: "Yes, I do. It's something I used to do when I was a kid. As I started playing stronger, heavier, hard-hitting music as I got into my teenage and into my adult life, I started using a Ludwig Speed King pedal. You can't play one of them in bare feet, because it's not very smooth; there are holes in it. So I went to using boxing boots, and so over the years of my drumming, I went from barefoot to boxing boots to back to bare feet when I switched to a DW pedal. And I've been playing barefoot for, I don't know, eight or nine years. The only reason I like to play in bare feet is because I have more freedom."

Revolvermag.com: Final question: Is Iron Maiden working on a new album?

McBrain: "We start working on a new record in November. We've got November and the first couple of weeks of December booked into writing. We're gonna do a new album in January 2010, and we should tour with that in late summer, fall time. That's the plan. Hopefully, God willing, everybody's health is good and we can get on with it and get out there again."

Bruce Dickinson to Perform on UK's Armed Forces Day

Henley Standard reports:

"Members of the military are to honoured next month when Lord and Lady McAlpine throw open the doors of their estate.

The Prime Minister has ordered that June 27 should be Armed Forces Day and has asked every county to host an event that is free to service personnel, veterans and cadets.

The Buckinghamshire event is to be held at Fawley Hill, on the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire border, and Lady McAlpine is working with the Lord Lieutenant's office to put together a thrilling day for about 3,500 people.

On show will be Lord McAlpine's own steam train and an armoured train from the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway.

There will be fairground rides and sideshows, vintage cars and military vehicles, craft and cookery demonstrations, displays by local food and drink producers and an air display featuring Spitfires, Hurricanes, Tiger Moths and the Red Blades, former members of the Red Arrows.

Military and civilian bands will play and it is hoped that Andrew Jarvis and Katherine Jenkins, who sang together at the Remembrance Day service at the Albert Hall, will perform.

A line-up of local stars will play as a rock band, including Jon Lord of Deep Purple, Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden, Nick Fyffe of Jamiroquai, Mickey Moody, formerly of Whitesnake, Joe Brown and his daughter Sam and Steve Balsamo, who starred in Jesus Christ Superstar.

Lady McAlpine said that with little time and minimum resources, she was seeking help from volunteers. She said: "We need a lot of things that are inexpensive in themselves but the costs mount up so all offers of help will be gratefully received, even if it is just making some cakes or manning a stall for 45 minutes."

A limited number of tickets are available to the public in return for a donation of at least £20 per head. Send a cheque, made payable to Buckinghamshire County Council, to: Joe Bradshaw, executive assistant to the chairman, Buckinghamshire County Council, Aylesbury, HP20 1UA. Money raised will go to forces' charities.

Email Lady McAlpine at ladyj@sirwmcalpine.com or call her on (01491) 637869. "
