Iron Maiden Meets Heavy Metal

on December 8, 2003 @ 19:46

Victoria Mitchell of the Scottish Press Association is reporting that IRON MAIDEN singer Bruce Dickinson toured a Royal Navy submarine base on Monday (Dec. 8).

Ahead of IRON MAIDEN's concert at the SECC in Glasgow tonight, he visited HM Naval Base Clyde near Helensburgh.

A self-confessed submarine fan, Dickinson toured two classes of boat, the 8,000-ton HMS Sovereign, and the 16,000-ton HMS Victorious at Scotland's largest military establishment.

This is the first time Dickinson has been on a submarine, after his fascination was sparked when he met Clyde-based submariner and guitar maker, Leading Operator Mechanic (LOM) Richard Banks.

He first met Dickinson when he made a guitar for Dave Murray, IRON MAIDEN's lead guitarist, and the pair soon discovered a mutual interest in music and submarines.

LOM Banks, being a huge IRON MAIDEN fan, was keen to fulfill his idol's dream and was instrumental in making the visit happen.

He said, "This has to be one of the best visits to HM Naval Base Clyde ever. Bruce Dickinson is genuinely fascinated by submarines and has been keen for some time to get onboard. The lads gave him a huge welcome and we are really looking forward to seeing Bruce and IRON MAIDEN at the SECC tonight."
