19/02/03: Iron Maiden to Headline Download Festival - Give Me Ed…’Til I’m Dead Tour 2003.

Iron Maiden have confirmed they will be headlining the Download Festival at the famous Donington Park on Saturday 31st May, 2003. This will be their only appearance in the UK this summer, as part of their Give Me Ed…’Til I’m Dead World Tour 2003.

The two day festival features Iron Maiden headlining the first of the two nights with special guests including Marilyn Manson and Deftones. This will be the premier UK rock festival of 2003.

Iron Maiden have headlined Donington festivals twice previously, back in 1988 and 1992, the former with record-breaking attendances in excess of 100,000 fans. This year’s festival will have over 50 of the best and most cutting edge bands in rock playing across three stages over the two days.

Bruce Dickinson says, “Playing in front of your home crowd is a fantastic way to kick off the Give Me Ed ...’Til I’m Dead Tour. There are some really strong bands on the bill and I think this will be the festival of the summer for sure. We've known for a few weeks that this was all coming together and I've found it very hard to try and not let anything slip out in case we gave the game away.”

“To be playing Donington again means a lot to us as it’s remembered as being the true home of metal festivals. To be headlining there again after so long is an indication of the resurgence of the music we all love. It's a very special festival for us as it really does feel like home.”

The Give Me Ed…’Til I’m Dead Tour 2003 has the band headlining not only their own shows but also just about every major festival throughout Europe this summer, before going to the USA later in the year. The first three shows in Scandinavia (announced just before Christmas) saw all 50,000 tickets sell out in the first week, including Stockholm’s 31,000 capacity Stadium, so the band know the Metal hordes are ready!

Bruce Dickinson continues, “This tour is all about having fun, as the name suggests. We love summer and we love playing big festivals. We’re going to be playing a lot of our favourite Maiden songs and many people know we've got a new album in the pipeline for later this year so perhaps we’ll be playing a new song or two. But basically it will be full on Maiden. Trouble is, when you have so many great songs, it’s hard to please everyone all of the time! Rest assured, the band are firing on all cylinders and the show will be as spectacular as always.

With all these headline festivals across Europe it’s shaping up to be another huge year for the band. We’ve got big plans for the next twelve months and this is just the beginning…”

Currently the band are in the middle of recording the, as yet, untitled album with producer Kevin Shirley who collaborated with the band on their last two albums.

No information is available at the moment but the feedback on the progress of the album from the studio is that, “Everyone’s very excited about this project. The band are loving working with Kevin again as he works quickly and gets the band to record everything as live as possible.”

Iron Maiden finished their last tour playing in front of a sell out 250,000 audience at the Rock in Rio III festival in January 2001 after which they took some time off. They regrouped at the end of last year and returned to London to start writing material for the new record.

Progress on the band’s studio recording is reported on in Kevin Shirley’s special diary. For access to Kevin’s diary plus all up-to-date news and information on how & where to get tickets for the Download Festival and future dates being announced shortly fans should check out www.ironmaiden.com.

This might confirm a bit my suggestion I had before that there will be TWO consecutive tours, like it was before the last album. This tour will be a kind of a short "best of" tour and later it will be the REAL 13th album tour. This is of course just pure speculation. But U know, the only thing that is better than ONE Maiden-gig is TWO Maiden-gigs.

The ear-bursting, adrenaline-pumping line-up confirmed so far includes:

- Iron Maiden - Headlining the first day as part of their "Give Me Ed... Til l'm Dead" summer World Tour, Britain's own Iron Maiden are one of the most successful and highly respected Metal acts ever. Renowned for the energy and power of their live performances, their show is always spectacular and will no doubt be a highlight of the festival. The band is currently recording a new Studio album due for release late summer. Although they may play one or two new songs off the album, the set will otherwise consist of band and fan favourites (and Eddie's!). This will be their only UK Summer appearance.

- Limp Bizkit - One of the most energetic groups in the fusion of metal, punk and hip-hop is back in the UK for their first show here in two years exclusively at Download. Limp Bizkit is returning this year with their new album Lessismore. Their headline slot at Download will give fans a chance to hear the new tracks live for the first time ever.

- Marilyn Manson - set for an explosive return to the UK, this is Marilyn's only confirmed UK festival date this year. With his new, eagerly anticipated album, The Golden Age Of Grotesque, due for release in time for the show this is sure to be one of the highlights.

- Deftones are currently holed up in a studio in Seattle putting the finishing touches on their new album which is set for release just before Download. Already, the album has been dubbed “the most groundbreaking album of the year” by Kerrang!

Over the next few months these first acts will be joined by many more international and UK artists who will be performing over three stages – the main stage, the Scuzz Stage, and the Radio 1/Kerrang! Stage which will be co-promoted by Radio 1 and Kerrang!

Maiden wouldn't release a new album and then play only one or two songs from it on a subsequent tour, even if it's just a summer festival one.

We might have a single, but May is too early: Maiden hopes to begin mixing in April, and there's the all marketing of an album that has to be made before releasing. Since the summer is a bad period to release anything, september might well be it...

Of course, I'd love a June date, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Cheers
