Over the years there have been many bands who have released covers of Maiden songs everyone from Angra to Cradle of Filth some have been excellent some have been down right hilarious. So it comes as a refreshing change when you get to hear something a little bit different. “A Piano Tribute to Iron Maiden” is such an album. It features 12 tracks from Iron Maidens back catalog played entirely on piano. Theres no lyrics, no guitars, no chellos just one man and his piano.

The album starts unfortunately with what I feel is one of the weaker songs on the album, Two Minutes to Midnight however my faith was quickly restored by following it with one of the strongest tracks, Wasted Years. The tracks cover the songs very well and stay on the whole faithful to the melody and speed of the Maiden originals but playing the notes of the vocal melodies rather than the melodies of the bass and guitar. As a result the songs sound like you would perhaps expect but its not easy to sing along to.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the songs which work best on this album are the songs which already featured quite heavy keyboard work in the originals. Songs such as Wasted Years, Caught Somewhere In Time and Brave New World however event songs like Aces High come off highly respectably. The guitar solos are understandably improvised but work well regardless.

If there is one criticism I can have of this album it’s that it perhaps lacks a little depth. Some songs feel like they need a bit MORE than the one piano, perhaps a string accompaniment but then this is a piano tribute to Maiden and not a string quartet tribute so its unfair to criticize the album for doing what it says on tin.

All that said it is a very enjoyable and listenable album and certainly offers a different way to listen to Maiden when you’re perhaps in a more chilled out mood. (8/10)
