I know this is borderline, since it's a sale, but it's still newsworthy (and we already mentionned many singles or covers by other bands in the news).

Cheers

I don't think anyone got it, it's only available for pre-order and the item will be dispatched in two or three weeks, so be patient. I've already ordered mine so I will post a review as soon as I get it.

Dream theater played the whole NotB album three times : In London one or two weeks before the Paris date that is on the recording, the Paris Gig and in Japan (Tokyo I think) last year. They've covered Master Of Puppets by Metallica earlier and they will cover other "classic albums" like they say.

Their version of NotB is very similar to maiden's one but they have done some minor changes :
- the number of the beast intro (Woe to you...) was played before Invaders
- Jordan Rudess played some of the guitarparts on his keyboard : no twin guitars
- I think the highlight is the jazzy version of Gangland

The weren't satisfied of their Gangland version so they played it another time for a better sound on the recording,

Hope it helps...

I've got a bootleg from the Paris show, with average sound. The Maiden covers were really good, specially the jazzy 'Gangland', although James Labrie had a tough time trying to hit Bruce's notes.

Bruce has a hard time nowadays to hit them himself. Sounds interesting, might buy it later but it's a pity they have only one guitar on it.

Here are the CD liner notes by Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater : Drums) :

When I met John Petrucci and John Myung in Sept of 1985, we had two immediate bands in common that were huge influences on all 3 of us. Both of these bands would pave the way for what we wanted our newly formed band's sound and style to be modeled after. The first band (and probably the most obvious) was Rush. The other was Iron Maiden.

I first heard of Iron Maiden sometime around 1982 when "the number of the beast" was released and they were doing a US tour with Judas Priest who had just released "screaming for vengeance". In my high school, most of the metalheads created some kind of friendly rivalry between Priest and Maiden (it was like the metal equivalent of The Beatles vs. The Rolling Stones in the 60's). You were allowed to like both bands, but ultimately had to pledge allegiance to one or the other...and as much as I dug Priest, there was no question that my loyalty was to Maiden. They had the POWER of The New Wave Of Heavy Metal bands, but they combined it with a Progressive sensibility... writing long songs which incorporated complex instrumental passages, operatic vocals and great musicianship.

I remember covering a few early Maiden instrumentals with my first band Intruder (Transylvania, The ides of March & Genghis Khan). And I vividly remember anxiously anticipating the release of the "new" Maiden album Piece Of Mind... picking it up on the day it was released and being blown away by their "new" drummer with the funny name. I remember seeing them live on the "World Piece Tour" at the Nassau Coliseum that year with Fastway an Coney Hatch opening. (Trivia note: James LaBrie was to do some brief touring as the singer in Coney Hatch a few years later).

This brings us back to Berklee in 1985...

When myself and the 2 Johns formed the band Majesty at Berklee, we started most of our rehearsals by jamming Maiden tunes... (The Trooper, Revelations, Hallowed Be Thy Name, Phnatom Of The Opera, Remember Tomorrow, Wrathchild, To Tame A Land, etc.) One of us would start a song and the 2 others could easily jump in at anytime and already know the whole piece off the top of our heads. I remember JP would tell me stories about how in high school, John Myung would spend days upon days locked in his room playing along the Number Of The Beast album on 45RPM to build up his stamina!!! (for those of you CD files that never owned a record player, that means the turntable was speed up about 50% from its normal speed).

In 2002, when DT began its tradition of covering complete classic albums from start to finish (for the 2nd set of the 2nd night at all 2nd night stands), I immediatly knew we had to do a Maiden album. For me, it was a toss between "The Beast" or "Piece of Mind". Although I think POM might be the favorite album of mine and the 2 Johns, it seemed that Beast was really the quintessential, classic Maiden album from start to finish and the right one for us to cover.

We performed The number Of the Beast 3 times in 2002: October 21st in London England, October 24th in Paris France, November 7th in Athens Greece and final performance on April 24th 2004 in Osaka Japan. The night represented here in this CD is the Paris performance.

Although the surprise factor was ruined by having performed in 3 nights earlier in London (damn internet), it didn't stop the fan's enjoyment as the Paris crowd was ELECTRIC from the opening moments of Vincent Price's intro to the final chord of Halloweb be thy name...

We've been privileged through the years to have developped a relationship with the Maiden guys both on and off the stage having played several shows with them in both 1992 and 2000... while also beeing joined on stage at various DT shows be Paul DiAnno (playing Killers in 1995), Bruce Dickinson (playing The Trooper in 1998) and Nicko McBrain (playing a drum duet with me in 1997 and playing soccer in 2002!).

They are a big part of Dream Theater's history and their influence can now be forever immortalized in this CD...

Up the irons,
MP

wavey.gif I already receive it.Great sound for being a live album. The band really need a second guitar(for this album) 'cause part of the solos was played by Jordan Rudess in the keyboard.Gangland its jazzy but sound cool.I give a 9 out of 10 for some reasons(minus 2nd guitar,NOT Bruce Dickinson vocals) but still a great CD to have.

Actually I think he hits them flawlessly.

My favorite tracks on the album are 22 Acacia Ave. and Children of the damned
And come to think of it, the jazzy gangland kicks ass too

I just listened to the whole thing, and it's pretty good, but I didn't like the keyboard solos. They have always sounded like shit to me and hearing some of Smiths solos done that awfully wasn't very nice. No disrespect to keyboard players, but I hate it. I didn't like the jazz gangland neither. I was hoping in the beginning to hear the brilliant drum intro of the song, but nah, it started with acoustic guitar. Nice sounding keyboards/pianos (I dont really know wich one it was), but I was hoping for the original so I got a bit dissapointed. Maybe it will sound better next time. And yet another bad thing was the singer bloke. The man sounds horrible. Maybe he can hit the high notes, but he doesnt posses a powerful like Bruce does. And Invaders was too slow! lol[1].gif
After all this bashing I must say that it is pretty good in the end. Give it a listen, it's worth it cool.gif

This Cd was waaaaay better than I thought it was going to be. headbang.gif

I think what people need to realize is that when bands do tributes, they don't have to sound exactally the same as the original. I find the song more interesting when they change it up a little. I think having keyboards as the 2nd guitar is pretty damn cool. Have any of you guys heard Children of the Bodom's Aces High cover? I like the keyboard solo in that song better than Maiden's original.

So I guess what I'm trying to say is: If you don't like covers, please don't bash on the song.
