Iron Maiden Confirms Ozzfest !

on March 15, 2005 @ 21:08

Maidenfans announced it, Iron Maiden confirms it !

Iron Maiden will indeed be part of Ozzfest, headline with Black Sabbath with bands Rob Zombie, Shadows Fall and Black Label Society sharing the main stage.

Bruce Dickinson says that all the songs will be coming from 'Iron Maiden, 'Killers', 'The Number of the Beast' and 'Piece of Mind'. For the European leg of the tour, there's still word of a mix of songs, leading to think that Maiden could have a shorter set in the US, but nothing is certain.

Jane Holman, general manager of Clear Channel Entertainment's touring division adds: "It was a real coup to get Iron Maiden this year (...) To have Iron Maiden playing with Black Sabbath is incredible. Heads will explode."

Tickets will range from $35 on the lawn to $85 for gold circle. Sharon Osbourne says: "We really, really try so hard to keep the costs down (...) We’re not one of these that say, 'We've got great bands, we can really yank the ticket prices and squeeze Joe Public.' We try to bring the best talent for the best prices. I wish a beer cost the same as it did 10 years ago, too."

Ozzfest 2005 will last from July to September, but the August 31 date (Nashville) won't feature Iron Maiden, as the band will be in Europe playing Ireland. The August 27 and 28 shows (Houston and San Antonio) seem also in jeopary for Maiden, as they should be doing their Reading appearance.
No word yet if Iron Maiden will indeed play all of the Ozzfest dates remaining or not.

On a side note, radio commercials in the US using Maiden and Sabbath songs are featured on heavy rotation since this morning.

UPDATE: Maiden's last Ozzfest gig will be Los Angeles on August 20.

Here's the new Iron Maiden press release regarding this matter:

Iron Maiden have confirmed appearing in the USA in July/August on this years Ozzfest alongside Black Sabbath.
Their “Eddie Rips Up… Europe/North America - Summer 2005 Tour” has already had tremendous on-sale reactions in Europe with tickets for their massive show in Gothenburg’s Ullevi Stadim on 9th July recently selling out all 53,500 in just 2½ hours - the second fastest sell-out ever in Sweden’s biggest venue after Bruce Springsteen ! Tickets for their show at Helsinki’s Hartwell Arena on July 6 and 7 went the same way with 22,000 tickets selling out in a day.

Comments singer Bruce Dickinson, “We’ve always had great support there before but this is stepping up another level entirely. This whole tour will be one of the biggest we have ever done in terms in the number of fans we are playing to and if the reaction continues like this every show will be a truly momentous occasion.

“Following the great reception received by our DVD “ The Early Days”, which chronicled the Maiden story over the first four albums, we decided to give the fans a special treat on this Tour by playing materiel almost exclusively from these albums, including a lot of songs that fans have been asking us to play for years along with fan favourites like Number of the Beast, Run to the Hills, Hallowed be thy Name, Wrathchild and The Trooper. And it will be a lot of fun for us playing stuff we haven’t played for years!!

“In keeping with this we will be bringing over for Ozzfest the full European show , naturally including as special guest Eddie in various appropriate guises!! The stage sets, production and backdrops will recreate aspects of the shows on the tours around those albums – Iron Maiden, Killers, Number of the Beast and Piece of Mind. Only bigger, much bigger!!! We don’t know if anyone has done anything like this before but we think it’s something the fans will really appreciate both in the choice of songs and in the Production values.

“Unfortunately we are unable to complete the full Ozzfest schedule as we were already confirmed to headline some major British festivals in that period, so apologies to fans in Texas and the South East. Having said that we are very much looking forward to the dates we are doing, especially with such a great bill. We’re sure it will be a fantastic day out for the fans”

These shows tie in with the earlier release of the hugely acclaimed DVD ‘The History Of Iron Maiden part 1: The Early Days’ .

Stay tuned to www.ironmaiden.com for the most up to date news, updates and information on when and where tickets are made available to avoid any disappointment.

15/03/2005 OZZFEST 2005

OZZFEST 2005 GETS LOUDER FOR ITS 10TH ANNIVERSARY WITH A STAGGERING LINE-UP OF LEGENDARY ARTISTS AND CUTTING-EDGE RISING STARS

TALENT INCLUDES BLACK SABBATH, IRON MAIDEN, ROB ZOMBIE, SHADOWS FALL, BLACK LABEL SOCIETY

THE ALL-DAY EXTRAVAGANZA OF MUSIC AND DERANGED MERRIMENT GETS UNDERWAY JULY 15 IN BOSTON

It’s big. It’s bad. And it’s back for more. Got a problem with that?

OZZFEST -the king of festivals- triumphantly returns this summer to celebrate its hard-earned 10th anniversary with the staggering line-up of Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Rob Zombie, Killswitch Engage, Shadows Fall and Black Label Society. The summer’s premier concert festival -which has propelled many of today’s rock bands to superstardom while paying close attention to its discerning fans - will roll out July 15 in Boston and visit 26 cities by the time it reaches West Palm Beach on September 4. The Hot Topic Second Stage will be headlined by Zombie and feature a preview of rock’s rising stars, including As I Lay Dying, Mastodon, The Haunted, In Flames, Arch Enemy, The Black Dahlia Murder, Bury Your Dead, Soilwork, Trivium, It Dies Today, A Dozen Furies and more.

'I'm most proud of the success of Ozzfest,” says founder SHARON OSBOURNE. “Everyone said it would never happen and 10 years later we are still in business.” In fact, 125 bands, 238 shows and over 4 million fans later, the all-day extravaganza of music and deranged merriment is roaring louder than ever. History in the making, 2005 marks the first time metal legends Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden have toured together and also represents Iron Maiden’s first OZZFEST appearance.

Iron Maiden singer Bruce Dickinson said, “This Summer’s Maiden touring is based on the recent “Early Days” DVD and all the songs we do at Ozzfest will be from our first four albums - Iron Maiden, Killers, Number of the Beast and Piece of Mind. We will be bringing over our full European show, naturally including as special guest Eddie in various appropriate guises!! The stage sets, production and backdrops will recreate aspects of the shows on the tours around those albums - only bigger… much bigger!!! We don’t know if anyone has done anything like this before but we think it’s something the fans will really appreciate both in the choice of songs and in the production values.”

Also debuting on the tour will be Texas-based band A Dozen Furies who landed their coveted Hot Topic Second Stage slot after winning OZZY and SHARON’s MTV “Battle For Ozzfest” reality series competition. Debuting last fall and lasting right up until the February launch of the fourth and final season of the Emmy-award winning “The Osbournes,” “Battle For Ozzfest” is the ultimate battle of the bands, with contestants having survived 2004’s grueling OZZFEST challenges.

This year, a limited number of fans who purchase OZZY OSBOURNE's first-ever 51-song, four-CD retrospective box set PRINCE OF DARKNESS (out March 22 of Epic Records) will be able to obtain one free Ozzfest ticket. The initial pressing of the box set will feature a precedent-setting promotion allowing fans to buy one OZZFEST general admission ticket and get one free.

OZZFEST, originally launched in 1996 as a limited two-city trek, has become a virtual breeding ground for up-and-coming bands. The renowned second stage has been instrumental in catapulting the careers of System of a Down, Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, Incubus, Slipknot, Disturbed, Godsmack and Chevelle. 'Playing Ozzfest --twice-- will always be among the highlights of our career,” notes drummer Samuel Loeffler of Chevelle, who most recently appeared in the festival’s 2003 line-up. “Personally speaking, I was honored and somewhat nervous about sharing the stage with Ozzy, but finally felt comfortable after both he and Sharon patted me on the ass.'

The heavy metal juggernaut has earned a hallowed position in the busiest tour season with a relentless commitment to its core fans and the consistency of quality they demand as their birthright. Just as the festival is committed to presenting the best music, it also provides an interactive, multi-sensory experience for concert-goers with a wide-range of attractions. The traveling show’s notorious “Village Of The Damned” --alive with tattoo artists, piercing booths, state-of-the-art video games, a wide range of vendors and much more-- promises to be wickedly tempting.

Judas Priest --one of the biggest attractions on last year’s tour-- declared: “We were thrilled to be part of such a unique moment in heavy metal history that will be remembered forever!” Jonathan Davis --lead singer for Korn, who pounded the main stage in 2003-- added, 'Ozzy and Ozzfest are some of the cornerstones of metal. I loved playing in front of the Ozzfest crowd, the fans at those shows were f$*#ing amazing.'

In addition to drawing vital hard rock acts, OZZFEST has always attracted a variety of select sponsors devoted to the tour’s core fan base. Hot Topic --returning to host the second stage-- will be the festival’s official soft line teen retailer. Throughout the day, Tama drums and Ibanez guitars will proudly showcase their arsenal in the Village. F.Y.E. (For Your Entertainment) is on board for the fifth consecutive year as the official music retailer and will host the FYE autograph tent giving fans the opportunity to meet some of their favorite OZZFEST artists. TrojanÒ brand condoms will also have presence in the Village as the official latex condom of OZZFEST. Jagermeister will once again bring the backyard BBQ party back to Ozzfest and prove their commitment to metal music with artist autograph signings and tons of free swag for attendees 21 and over.

Hmm.. I wonder

As for them being a nostalgia act, fine, as long as they don't forget the future while they think of the past

That's true! But in USA, Maiden aren't recognized as they should. During the 2003 tour, some of the date have been cancelled due to low sales tickets. An other fact about that is the 2003-2004 DOD tour, only 2 cities!! With the Ozzfest, they will be able to hope to have bigger audience than the two last tours. But in my opinion, it's an error to co-headline with has-been like Black Sabbath, their 70s stuff is great but the rest is absolute crap...

youre not true!
- none of the 2003-2004 gigs was cancelled due to poor ticket sales
- DOD tour was planned not to be extensive in US after exhausting 2003 tour
- bigger audience? look at those ozzfest dates and compare it with last IM tours in US - IM played mostly the same or even bigger venues (except Nissan Pavillon in LA)

its an indescribable shame that IM humble and lower themselves to take part in the shade of someone else
EVEN at the time when they are playing stadiums in europe!!! (BS and ozzy can hardly play some arenas and festivals)

I don't remember wich gig were canceled but two were cancelled due to sales ticket... Anyway, during the 2003 Summer tour, a lot of arenas in USA were only at half of their capacity. I read it in a french magazine few month ago and it came from Bruce a good source I think!

Maiden will play many more cities that they would have otherwise (even if it's still unknown if Maiden will play them all, especially the last ones).

It will also put them in front of a wider US metal audience. People that might have forgotten about them or don't know them very well. It's certain that the US sales of Angel of Retribution were boosted by Judas Priest's appearance at Ozzfest 2004 !

So, in the end, Maiden made a reasonable decision: making a full US tour without too much financial risks.

Cheers

I gotta agree with The Saint here...sad amounts of hero worship that claim that Iron Maiden should always be on top is kind of ridiculous considering the current musical climate in the US of A. I'm a little upset that they won't be coming to Canada with Ozzfest, yes I'd love to see the whole thing, but I'll survive.

Playing Ozzfest is going to be a mega boost for Maiden in the US, and metal in general.

I hope your right. I hope its not a disaster for them. I think people here in the US are rather ignorant about Maiden and think they "suck" without really knowing anything about them. I read alot of quotes like, "Maiden suck. They are butt rock",(Ive never understood that description. Isnt "butt rock" crap like Poison, Warrant, Wasp etc?) Or, "their too old".

I also think if Maiden played all of those dates in the US on thier own, the tour would be a disaster. Ticket sales would be very low. Thats just a fact. Maiden need to , unfortunately "prove" themselves, or re-introduce themselves to the US audience.
I think a live show of them playing material off thier first 4 albums, and the exposure at a popular venue like Ozzfest should turn some heads for sure. They certainly have earned it after 25 years.

bruce is always overstating smile.gif hes never satisfied.
GETID was standart tour sold out in 75%-100%

to all other guys:
i agree with all the arguments BUT dont you feel that e same - that Maiden are losing reputation and that they could do it in US without such a dagradation
they need no help with headlining in US since 1983. why now? especially in time when theyre much more popular than ever (maybe not in US).
they could do their own fest or bring out gigs with various music styles + popular supporting acts like velvet revolver / mastodon whoever...
they always had their own stage set and promo things with Eddie on it and now they will be on posters under that ludicrous devil - ozzfest symbol

and dont mix Priest here
they are great but they never had nothing to do with such a high popularity, record sales, chart positions, concert attendance like major-league Maiden

Don't underestimate the legacy of the Priest, when it comes to success in the States.

Actually, when it comes to record sales, Priest has had a lot of platinum and golden albums/videos in the States.
Almost as much as Maiden.

Priest:
14 golden of which 5 became platinum of which 1 became double platinum

Maiden:
14 golden of which 8 became platinum of which 0 became double platinum

We're not sure these are the final dates, but there was a fuck up by Maiden's management: they released the Ozzfest press release without adding which dates Maiden would attend.

Skunk revised the thing this morning, making the headlines that Maiden wouldn't participate in the end of the Ozzfest tour. Not a very good publicity for Maiden.

The post-August 20 dates are a no-go for Maiden, that's certain. Since they are announced for other bands, they won't be rescheduled. Now remains the possibility of Maiden adding some US dates in September, but there are still rumors that after the UK and Ireland leg, they might go for a few more European dates before taking at least two months to relax in the perspective of a November-December-January writing & studio time.

Cheers

It's the first time we see the official name of the tour. Maidenfans was right about it from the beginning:

Eddie Rips Up… Europe/North America - Summer 2005 Tour

Just that it's not a world tour but Europe and North America (well, USA only it seems) only.

Here's what Ozzfest Unofficial has to say:

Due to the band’s commitment to other festivals overseas, Iron Maiden will not play the last seven dates at Ozzfest 2005. Here are the affected dates:

Aug. 23 – Albuquerque, NM – Journal Pavilion
Aug. 25 – Dallas, TX – Smirnoff
Aug. 27 – Houston, TX – Cynthia J. Woods Pavilion
Aug. 28 – San Antonio, TX – Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre
Aug. 31 – Nashville, TN – Starwood Amphitheatre
Sep. 02 – Charlotte, NC – Verizon
Sep. 04 – West Palm Beach – Sound Advice

HOWEVER, it is being rumored by a reliable source that someone will replace Maiden for those dates, though no decisions have been made.

Cheers

In other Ozzfest news, rumor has it that VELVET REVOLVER will most likely replace IRON MAIDEN on the final seven Ozzfest 2005 shows.

Anthrax is still not confirmed for Ozzfest and might end up playing on the Megadeth tour...
