Maiden Comments on BBC Radio One Poll

on February 3, 2005 @ 19:40

Iron Maiden have been very amused by a recent Radio 1 Poll celebrating the 1000th Number One last week.

Over 25,000 listeners voted for their favourite ever Number One single and Iron Maiden came second with their classic track ‘Bring Your Daughter To The Slaughter’, being narrowly beaten to the top spot by Queen with ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’. And ironically, despite the obvious popularity and two weeks at No 1, this was probably the only one listed that didn’t get any airplay or support BBC Radio

Iron Maiden’s madman drummer Nicko McBrain said;

“ You have to have a laugh, don’t you. Radio 1 listeners in their droves vote for Maiden yet Radio 1 itself never plays us!!! And never have !! When this was No 1 they didn’t even play it on the Chart Countdown !!! They obviously have little idea what their listeners want which is probably why a lot of them are changing channels. Pathetic really. But thanks to the listeners – hopefully we will see a lot of you in the Summer ”

Look out for the imminent announcement of Maiden’s Summer festival shows

This result follows the success of Iron Maiden’s recent single ‘Number Of The Beast’ which entered the charts at no. 3 and is still in the UK Top 40 four weeks later. And yet again it was completely ignored by Radio One !!! And this was Maidens 32nd Top 40 single with 14 of them going Top 10 and 7 going Top 5 so it would seem that the band do quite well without radio. Maybe that’s why they are still so immensely popular

The full list published by Radio One is as follows:

1. Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
2. Iron Maiden - Bring Your Daughter To The Slaughter
3. Michael Jackson - Billie Jean
4. Madonna - Like a Prayer
5. Madonna - Vogue
6. Elvis Presley - Jailhouse Rock
7. Oasis - Don't Look Back in Anger
8. Abba - Dancing Queen
9. Mariah Carey - Without You
10. John Lennon - Imagine
11. The Beatles - Hey Jude
12. Will Young - Leave Right Now
13. Cliff Richard - We Don't Talk Anymore
14. Busted - Thunderbirds / 3am
15. Kate Bush - Wuthering Heights
16. Kylie Minogue – Can't Get You Out Of My Head
17. Tatu - All The Things She Said
18. Spice Girls - Wannabe
19. Celine Dion - My Heart Will Go On
20. Westlife - Flying Without Wings

I think it would be mainly all the maidenfans from various message boards that gave you lot the vote Nicko wink.gif

Knowing that the poll was heavily advertised on the IMBB, they could have said something about the fans voting massively for the band they love...

Anyway, as a press release, it was better this way.

Cheers

Whatever the background to the voting, it doesn't really matter. Surely if you are a fan of any group you will favour their releases and support them in a poll. If Maiden fans were prompted then so what? It shows that we are loyal and truly passionate about 'our' band, unlike many others who just follow the current trend.

Well if everyone who viewed this site in one day voted just once we could have sent 3000 votes so I guess its not beyond the realms of possibility tongue.gif

I don't think anyone infirmed this point. It's just that the press release (being a press release) makes it feel like BB listeners came out of the blue and voted for Maiden, whereas the IMBB and Maidenfans.com alike campaigned for that vote, BBC listeners or not. biggrin.gif

I for sure voted for Maiden. Let's face it. Metal, as an underground music movement, uses the Internet for communication. If I were to wander around my university campus of some 5000 souls, asking people if they like heavy metal, I'd probably be completely ignored.

Now, on the campus hub, I've made contact with a couple dozen metalheads.

And then we add in the Maidenfans board here.

Are there pop fangroups like this? At least ones not consisting of 14 year olds going "lol i luv justin lol". No!
