Maiden Wins Finland Grammy

on February 28, 2005 @ 18:45

Iron Maiden has won the equivalent of a Grammy in Finland, an Emma. They won for Best International Act, a category voted by music consumers and not a specialized jury.

During his acceptance speech via videoconference, Bruce was seen being in a studio and said that he couldn't tell what he was doing there, for it was a secret.

Could he be putting the final touches to either his latest solo effort -rumored to be released in early May- or his Greatest Hits DVD -rumored for the end of 2005- ?

Thanks to jarkka and The Bishop

If Maiden would be as popular as in finland all over the world. They would be the biggest band on the planet. You finish rule, I wonder why Maiden is so extremely popular over there. You also got MTV and I guess they don't play Maiden there either.

The Maiden sound must fit quite well to the character and feelings of the finnish.

Who knows what is Bruce up to? Must say that I am very looking forward to his new album.

It has been a while since his last album came out, actually 8 years. WOW, time goes by so fast.

Thanks a lot for your kind words for the Finns! Metal has always been popular in Finland and at the moment it seems that it is the number one thing for the kids here. Look at the weather here: minus 20 today - you don´t have to be Sherlock Holmes to find out that reggae or dancing is NOT in our minds easily. Metal is the way to get out of the cold dark world.

Look at the list of big names of metal doing concerts in Finland this year:
Judas Priest 3 gigs, Maiden 2 gigs, Sabbath, Slayer, Dio, Megadeth. Mötley Crüe etc.

I don´t watch MTV much, but I think Maiden is not on their playlist. Who remembers the times of Headbanger´s Ball... They should bring it back!

Well done Maiden biggrin.gif

The Fins have a muich better music taste than the British or Americans sadly.

I love Finnish metal. Even if you don't like Stratovarius, Nightwish, Finntroll, Sonata Arctica, Children Of bodom, Charon etc you have to admit they are a damn site better than the most of the stuff the American produces [with the exception of Mastodon] and England produces [metal just aint popular anymore, we used to have loads of great metal bands, not many new ones, actualy I can't think of any, luckily Maiden are still around and as brilliant as they ever were].

The Finnish version of the Brits/Grammys is calle dthe Emmas I think. From what I remember:
By public vote Maiden were the best forgien act and Nightwish were the best finnish act. Nightwish won 4 other awards, including best metal and best album. The bassist Marco insulted manufactured pop in his acceptance speech, I wish someone here was cool enough to do that. The rest was really obscure Finnish stuff few non Fins have heard of.

I think Maiden is very popular across Scandinavia and in South America too. Thanks to evangelical christians they never made it big in the US and for some reason Britain has a very modest amout of Maiden Fans seeing as it is their home country.

One thing I've noticed about Finnish metal [I am no expert, so I may be wrong] is that keyboards seem to be at least important, if not more so sometimes than guitar. Guitar obsessives may find it lacking in amazing solos and riffs and be put off. Especialy Maiden fans who are used to 3 incredible guiatarists would probably think 'where's the insane guitar, this sucks' and not notice the keyboards, vocals, drumming, lyrics etc because they are too disapointed with the lack of amazing guitar.
