Female vocals on upcoming album?

on March 20, 2006 @ 20:01

As noted by geordierussel from IMOC, on what seems to be a Journalist forum, a post reads as follows:

"Just Back From A Recording Studio In London, I can confirm that Iron Maiden are paying homage to their heroes.

A track I overheard was a blatant Pink Floyd rip-off complete with female backing vocals (Great Gig In The Sky type thing), I kid you not. And it's not a "concept" album as had previously been reported."

could be something like sea of madness i seem to remember there was a part that sounded like a female vocal then again it could have been a synth

it would be great if they tried some electronic sonds with the rock stuff

Come on you guys......get real!!!!It would be really lame if Maiden did something like that.If they wanted to change they could have down tuned the guitars or something.Oh my god....

why would it be lame i think steve harris and the guys are up for something different

Great gig in the sky is so amazing

Pink Floyd are great, but I don't think that a full Pink Floyd style album would be appreciated. Female vocals, if used effectively (as Maiden no doubt would) would rock-as long as the music is still undeniably Maiden.

why not...but for me, it's difficult to believe that something of the future Maiden has been heard by a journalist...Usually, all is secret till the album is in stores !

#11391, March 21, 2006 @ 13:44

Though Great gig in the sky is a brilliant masterpiece, I don't think that a female vocalist would suite Maiden. But we'll see.

this smells like rumour mongering to me, i doubt anythin so striking would have been revealed to anyone just yet.

The female vocals aren't a bad idea. This indicates an acoustic song ( if Great gig in the Sky isn't a ballad forgive me, haven't ever listened to it). Although I don't think Pop Bitch Forums is a reliable source :-\

i hope that the maiden album will be great but a female you must be kiddning

#11396, March 21, 2006 @ 22:32

Maybe I'm just not hip to the scene, but wtf kind of credibility does a source named "Pop Bitch Forums" have?

#11397, March 22, 2006 @ 02:45

Anonymous said:

I dont think that maiden would mix well with female vocals.

Pop bitch forums doesnt sound like a very reliable source, so i'm still going to keep hoping for a concept album.

#11398, March 22, 2006 @ 03:09

Anonymous said:

First, consider the source. I went to the PopBitch home page and saw this: "Popbitch is a free weekly celebrity gossip email..." Celebrity gossip is not a credible source, in my opinion.

I grant the possibility that Maiden may be trying to do something that is new and unexpected by their fans. But until more credible evidence arises, I'll file this away in the "unlikely" category.

im definitely waiting for something different. SIT, SSOASS are great examples.
but i think maiden neverr could get new sound with that caveman producer...

Sounds like Maiden are making a shot at breaking new ground - even by Maiden standards - with this new record. So far I am intrigued and excited with pretty much everything I've heard about - female vocals and more prog especially - but I'm not so sure what to make of the "Pink Floyd" idea. I like Vinegar Joe, Comfortably Numb and Dark Side Of The Moon, but apart from that I can't say Floyd are really my cup of tea. Well, if things are on schedule we should be in fore some interesting listening in October - Nicko JR

The Pink Floyd rip-offf part may be true. Steve did say that they were going for a Pink Floyd sound with 'Face in the Sand.' Maybe they are just taking that to the next level on the new album.

The part about female vocals sounds hard to believe. Iron Maiden are one of the most musically conservative bands out there. Female vocals would be a huge variation from their traditional sound; I don't beleive they would do that.

...on the other hand, they did recently record and all-acousting song. Maybe they'll find a way to incorporate femaie backing-vocals into a maiden-style template. Who knows...maybe it'll work. Never underestimate Steve Harris!

#11407, March 22, 2006 @ 20:53

Actually Steve Harris will be doing the vocals on Maiden's cover of Great Gig in the Sky which is going to be one of the four b-sides for the new album.

Woh I'm a law-breaker. Oh yeah I'm a mick-taker. Don't you know I'm a rogue trader? And I'm also a poet and didn't know it... Oh, I do beg your puddin', it's just the shellshock in the kitchen induced by all this talk of Pink Floyd on a Maiden sight that's making me write lyrics for the new Maiden album. I thought this site would offer a sanctuary from the Floydsters, but alas I've been rumbled! The police are here... aaaaah! Aaaaaaah! "Get down on the floor and step away from the laptop, you insane madman!" ... Cheers folks, just had to get all that out of me system ... hehay! Just wondering where the guy/girley who posted about the B-sides got there info from, if they were being serious that is? Cheers again - Nicko JR

I think it's just a synth, and that the journalist doesn't know what sounds a synth can make.

This is very unlikely to be true...

Also if you read Kev Shirley's diary it really doesnt sound like the album is going this way at all.

Just giving you some news that might relate to this rumour. There was a diary on the IMOC and it had a hidden picture, it was on the server but it wasn't posted in the diary.
The picture was a girl, but it could've been anyone though.

the part in sea of madness that someone said sounds like a girl signing is actually Bruce doing falsetto vocal and is the only time I can think of where he ever used falsetto in a maiden song.

#11551, April 20, 2006 @ 23:45

Yeah, I knew it was Bruce the first time I heard it - I never thought otherwise. Where was this live version of SOM - I've never come across a live recording of this one. Somewhere In Time is an album which seems to suffer on the setlists for the band's tours - the recent ones at least. There was nothing from that album on the Brave New World Tour, Dance Of Death Tour, or on last year's tour, as of course Maiden were only playing stuff from the 1980-1983 period. Maybe this time around, eh? And I know I'll probably get trampled to death for saying this, but I also hope they play something from Virtual XI other than Clansman or Futureal on this coming tour. I know Clansman is widely seen as the best one on the album, and I love it too without a doubt, but maybe a live performance of say Lightning Strikes Twice and/or The Educated Fool would go down quite well. I'm not sure how Bruce would handle the vocal duties on these numbers, but the instrumental sections of these two examples are really good, and I think VXI is extremely underrated. Well, I've said my piece. Now I think I'll get out of here before the riot kicks off, but if anybody is on my side, let me know about it. I'm out of here... Nicko JR

Worth bearing in mind that the Maiden sound is pretty recognisable - and VERY adaptable. It wouldn't be that hard to take something like BNW or the Trooper and turn it into a dance/trance track - the only reason nothing like that's been done by the boys themselves is that they always play live, so a purely electronic instrumentation wouldn't suit them.

Something like female vocals would be even easier - remember, it needn't be a whole song. It needn't even be the lead vocals, but perhaps part of a backing.

The Iron Maiden that played Paschendaele, for instance, sounds different to that that played Moonchild, which itself sounds different to that that played Killers or 2 Minutes. The music is the same, yet different. Thats how good music is, it grows with the artists, and a good artist never rules anything out.

So yeah, could be. I'm not saying it's going to happen, but I'm not saying that you could rule it out either. :P

hey females can be hardcore too. don't be so sexist. personally i don't think it's Maiden's style and it's probably Bruce using a falsetto. oh and whoever is telling people on this site to get a life, don't you have better things to do then tell Maiden fans to get a life?? Hah! thought not, so why don't you just shut up and annoy somone else.
