Murray and Smith in Guitarextreme Magazine

on August 29, 2006 @ 11:46

Dave and Adrian explain how they started to play the guitar and give very well known details about their beginnings.
Both of them consider that learning to play alone helps you to develop your own style (?). They say that nowadays the internet can be very helpful for the young guitarists because there are a lot of resources to help learning to play.

In this type of magazine, the guitarists are commonly asked who their favourite guitar players are. Adrian answers that, without any doubt, Joe Satriani is his favorite. In second rank he puts Jeff beck for his playing in the 70s. Dave says he does agree but would also add Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Django Reinhardt.

Both guys explain that the new album has been recorded live, all musos playing in the same room. Dave and Adrian also say that they only used very few effects hence keeping the sound clear and natural. Adrian underlines that they mostly focused their attention on the way they played rather than on which effects could be added. Very interestingly he says that the air temperature in the studio was monitored because it affects the way the band sounds. He adds that they kept cool temperature because when it increases sound softens!!!

When asked how the band wrote the album and if the way they used to write had changed through time, Adrian explains that he always had a “Thin Lizzy” type of writing but that for this album he slightly changed his approach to move towards a more “progressive rock” style.
He says that they felt very confident and that it helped them to find a good balance between Steve’s compositions and his own ideas.
