Bird Studios create hordes of "gimps" for new Iron Maiden animated promo
New London company Bird Studios has completed a four-minute 3D promo for Wildest Dreams, the current single from spandex-clad fortysomethings Iron Maiden. The promo is set in what Bird brilliantly describes as a "macabre fairytale world of sickening demons which would still be appropriate for daytime TV".
Key tho the promo was the design and animation of "Eddie", the band's undead mascot. "In the past he had been portrayed as a bit stumpy and silly in 3D", said Matt McKinney, senior animator at Bird. "We wanted to take him back to his roots as a real bad mother (sic). We kept a sence of fun by making him a crazed ringmaster with hordes of gimp-like followers".
Eddie's face was in Maya using NURBS, and his body built in Sub-Division Surfaces. Senior character animator Kevin Rooney was filmed acting out Eddie's moves and these shots were then rotoscoped in Maya.
