IRON MAIDEN / Visions of the beast DVD / EMI
by: PER OLAV DIGERUD
This is the brand new DVD from Iron Maiden, and it’s a stunner! Soon to be released any day now, Metal Express gives you one of the first reviews of this great package. The band is currently on tour, and their new album will hit the shops in September. But let’s turn attention to Visions of the beast!
It is a double disc, featuring every promotion-video ever made by the British giants of heavy metal. 31 to be exact. Other features and extras include, special new cartoon instalments in some of the videos, a biography, special versions of some of the videos, a cut from Live in Rio, a football video, and probably the best presentation segment that’s been done on a rock`n roll DVD so far. I don’t want to give anything away, but Eddie and the mean streets of London Town, play an important part on this release…
It will take you more than three hours to watch the whole programme, so this is definitely value for your money! From Women in uniform to Brave new world- Live in Rio, it’s been long and eventful ride, both for the band and the viewer. Check out the youthful aggression of the first couple of videos, to the extravagant productions made in their prime with Dickinson, to the low-key (and dare I say, low budget..) years with Blaze Bayley , and back again on the top with the returning Bruce Dickinson. It is by creating great music( and videos), they have achieved their legendary status, and Visions of the beast salutes this fact.
Having grown up on their music( and videos) throughout the eighties, it was a thrill to be able to watch the first couple of videos. Seldom shown, Women in uniform and Wratchchild, are an important part of this package. Paul Dianno left after the first two albums, but they feature some of the best songs of Maiden. Of course the majority of Visions of the beast feature Bruce Dickinson, and rightfully so. What a voice, what a frontman, and his contribution to the classic Maiden sound can not be doubted. Even the Blaze Bayley videos are fun to watch now, although I were extremely disappointed at the time. By the way; we should not be on Blaze`s back, because who in their right mind would turn down singing with Maiden?? So, let`s give the guy a break, and a well deserved pat on the back for a job well done.
If you just can`t wait for the new album, or an in-concert appearance in your town, this will satisfy your needs…for a while.

thanks
I bought the "Visions of the beast" DVD a week ago.
Even though some of the videos seemed somewhat lowbudget, (of course I've seen most of them before so that did not came as a suprise for me), it was great fun to watch and as the review above implies the presentation is very well designed. The Crome Eddie is by no means my fav.-Eddie but he works as a "showhost" anyway.
And the sound was absolutely stellar!
For me it was particulary interesting to watch and listen to "women in uniform" as I've actually never listened to it before! Not very Maiden like that one, but then of course it not a Maiden original either.
Futureal growed upon me when I watched the video, maybe that guy Blaze aint that bad after all...
My favourite video was "flight of Icarus". Great song and a fitting video to go with it.
The cartoon extras was also fun.
In sum its a must have for every Iron Maiden fan IMO.
God bless Iron Maiden!
Thank you and good night!
No I meant Man on the Edge not Futureal, damn.
Also good review from Bravewords.com
"IRON MAIDEN Visions of the Beast (Sanctuary)
Sit through 31 Iron Maiden videos from 1980's 'Women In Uniform' to 2001's 'Brave New World' and you can't help but appreciate the fact that these road warriors know that their strength, through good albums and bad, has always lain in their amazing live shows. And, as such, they mostly leave the high-concept videos to others and basically give the people what they want: tons of concert footage shot around the world. Visions Of The Beast collects every one of the band's promotional videos onto two DVDs, with a running time of more than three hours. In addition to previously unreleased videos, like 'Tailgunner' and a Blaze-fronted live version of 'Afraid To Shoot Strangers' that is perhaps even more poignant today, there are Camp Chaos animated versions of six classic tracks. What is unfortunate about this collection is the lack of Paul DiAnno material: only 'Women' and 'Wrathchild' represent that era. However, since those early albums basically predate music channels like MTV and Much Music, it's easy to see why the band didn't make many promotional videos. In contrast, four tracks each from both Seventh Son Of Seventh Son and Fear Of The Dark are included. It's nonetheless pretty amazing to be able to watch the band evolve and mature, both musically and personnel-wise. Bruce appears, Bruce leaves and then returns again, minus about three feet of hair! A terrific collection of (mostly) amazing music and energetic footage.
9.0 Adem Tepedelen"
this is the most amazing dvd i own to date! the intro and outro's are amazing, and hte hidden features are funny and cool. the camp chaos videos are spectacular, but i refuse to watch the blaze videos. the man is an idiot. The live videos are so great. its funny to hear wrathchild, and not hear the entire crown singing. it is quite chilling to watch fear of the dark (rock in rio). maiden is god, eddie is my own personal jesus christ UP THE IRONS!
