Essential Maiden Hits to Be Released for Ozzfest

on May 18, 2005 @ 23:37

According to both justHerb, a proeminent member of the Screamforme forums and MusicTap.net, a new Maiden hits album is on its way for a release July 5. This is in line with earlier rumors that Maidenfans relayed.

This best-of album will apparently only be released in North America by Columbia and Legacy to accompany the Ozzfest Maiden Tour. 30 seconds commercials will feature on Fuse and MTV2.

The future 'Trooper' single, announced for the summer, could be linked with that release.

Here's the tracklist that this 'The Essential Iron Maiden' will feature:

Disc One:

Paschendale
Rainmaker
The Wicker Man
Brave New World
Futureal
The Clansman
Sign of the Cross
Man on the Edge
Be Quick or Be Dead
Fear of the Dark (Live)
Holy Smoke
Bring Your Daughter...
The Clairvoyant

Disc Two:

The Evil That Men Do
Wasted Years
Heaven Can Wait
2 Minutes To Midnight
Aces High
Flight of Icarus
The Trooper
The Number of the Beast
Run To The Hills
Wrathchild
Killers
Phantom of the Opera
Running Free (live)
Iron Maiden (live from Dance of Death tour, previously unreleased)

The CD booklet will include extensive liner notes, detailed discography and rare photos.

All music is digitally remastered from the original master tapes.

This double CD would come only two months ahead of the new CD and DVD, entitled 'Death on the Road'.

Update (May 26):
The album can now be pre-ordered from the Sony Music Store. The tracklisting is confirmed as is the release date, but the artwork is still unknown: click here.
The best-of is also listed on Amazon.com.

Why?!?!??! We don't need another greatest hits albums. This must be for the fans they hope to pick up after Ozzfest. The tracklist isn't as good as it could be either. I just noticed it doesn't have have Hallowed Be Thy Name, lol. Oh well, it's not like I'm going to buy it.

Because the Essential compilations sell quite well and record companies maximize the profits with minimum costs perhaps?

They're probably trying to re-establish a hold in the US, where Metal has lost its popularity to grungy "nu-metal" shit.

Just an idea...

Yeah, yeah, and you will buy it. biggrin.gif

For a Maiden fan there's no reason to get this compilation, as it doesn't offer naything new. Anyway, it's a better selection of songs than "Edward the great"...

Well, it seems to me that they just want a CD to put in with the vendors at Ozzfest, which is actually pretty smart, since most people won't be going to see Maiden, but to see the associated nu-metal artists. Edward the Great doesn't cover enough albums (or the early albums) to be effective in this role.

What I'd do, if I were Maiden, is release a "Best of the Beast 2", that you could buy either bundled with the original BotB 2 CD edition, or as a seperate disc to compliment your existing copy of BotB.

It's a smart move in terms of bundling a hits CD with Ozzfest, as it could drive sales.

Now, for fans its pointless, but ETG is one of the recent album that still sells the most in the US, so, from the point of view of the labels, it's interesting.

True, Maiden could have said no, but since they're not that big in the US...

Cheers

Of course, then you look at it this way:
1996: Best of the Beast
1999: Ed Hunter
2002 (?): Edward the Great
2005: Essential Maiden Hits

Every three years, like clockwork!

This is very true, but I live in the US and Maiden just seems to be getting more popular every day. The grungy nu-metal shit here seems to be making a decline. Alot of newer metal bands are starting to actually have *gasp* guitar solos in them. Alot of newer bands are startong to go back to their roots.

Both Bravewords and Blabbermouth are confirming the album (not too late biggrin.gif ).

Only doubt now is the release date: originally it was for July 5, then the Sony Store posted a July 7 date and now, the press release announced July 12...

Anyway, it's just in time for Ozzfest, which is probably the main reason behind this release.

Couldn't locate the artwork, but I'm working on it (will be boring, as many of the others in this Essential series... we'll see).

Here's the Blabbermouth report:

Legendary metal band IRON MAIDEN will release the career-spanning, two-CD compilation "The Essential Iron Maiden" through Sanctuary Records on July 12, 2005.

"The Essential Iron Maiden" features some of the greatest heavy metal music ever recorded. IRON MAIDEN have had huge worldwide impact these past 25 years thanks to all-time classic albums like "Iron Maiden", "Killers", "The Number Of The Beast", "Piece Of Mind", "Powerslave", "Live After Death", "Somewhere In Time", "Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son", "No Prayer For The Dying", "Fear Of The Dark", "The X Factor", "Virtual XI", "Brave New World", "Dance Of Death" and other live albums. Every studio album and lineup of IRON MAIDEN is represented here. The package also includes sleeve notes from noted journalist Lonn Friend. A sneak preview of the upcoming double live DVD and CD "Death On The Road" is provided thanks to the inclusion of "Iron Maiden" from this CD/DVD.

The current, longtime lineup of vocalist Bruce Dickinson, guitarist Dave Murray, guitarist Adrian Smith, guitarist Janick Gers, bass guitarist Steve Harris and drummer Nicko McBrain recorded and filmed "Death On The Road" in Germany in 2003 on the "Dance Of Death" tour.

The songs on "The Essential Iron Maiden" are:

Disc One:

01. Paschendale
02. Rainmaker
03. The Wicker Man
04. Brave New World
05. Futureal
06. The Clansman
07. Sign Of The Cross
08. Man On The Edge
09. Be Quick Or Be Dead
10. Fear Of The Dark (Live)
11. Holy Smoke
12. Bring Your Daughter...To The Slaughter
13. The Clairvoyant

Disc Two:

01. The Evil That Men Do
02. Wasted Years
03. Heaven Can Wait
04. 2 Minutes To Midnight
05. Aces High
06. Flight Of Icarus
07. The Trooper
08. The Number Of The Beast
09. Run To The Hills
10. Wrathchild
11. Killers
12. Phantom Of The Opera
13. Running Free (Live)
14. Iron Maiden (Live)

IRON MAIDEN will be touring North America again this summer as co-headliners with BLACK SABBATH on Ozzfest 2005, the 10th anniversary of the enormously popular festival.

Cheers
