Trooper Single Hit Number 5 in UK Charts

on August 21, 2005 @ 16:34

'The Trooper' single, released this week in many countries, has hit the #5 place on the UK charts.

In typical BBC fashion, the lame presenters used an array of derogatory comments.

Update (August 22):
Here's how the official Maiden website comments the news:
Iron Maiden stormed into the UK singles chart yesterday at No 5 with 'The Trooper' - their 16th Top Ten Single - taken from their forthcoming double Live album 'Death On The Road'. 'Iron Maiden have had more hits than any other heavy metal band in chart history, with 16 of their singles making the Top 10, 33 reaching the Top 40, and 35 entering the Top 75 since their 1980 debut Running Free' (Music Week).

Iron Maiden – The Trooper
EMI - 15 August 2005
Publication date: 22 August 2005, 18:51:07 | Author: Stuart A Hamilton

Another day, another Iron Maiden live album. Ho, hum. There must be several hundred of them on the go now, with ‘Death On The Road’ the next, poorly titled one. Still, Maiden fans will put it in the Top 10, Steve Harris can renew his (newly expensive) West Ham season ticket, and the world will trundle on.

Still, I always liked ‘The Trooper’, and despite a ropy Bruce vocal performance, the galloping guitars are a treat. For your money, the enhanced CD also has the original album version, which really shows up the previously mentioned ropy Bruce vocal, and a live version of ‘Prowler’ which may be temporarily exclusive to this release, and as befits their glorious earlier material, knocks the spots of anything else on this single.

The enhanced bit includes ‘The Trooper’ live, from the forthcoming DVD. ‘Death On The Road’ – surprise! And you get the original video for the track, which is available on the DVD, ‘Visions Of The Beast’.

Very much for fans only, this will be Top 10 for a week, then vanish like the fabled heavymetalosaurus, whose loins it sprung from.

7.5 out of 10
