Blaze Talks about B&B, Sanctuary, Dance of Death
Metalexpress just released an audio interview of Blaze Bayley, asking him about B L A Z E’s recent 'Blood & Belief' album.Blaze first talks about the writing and recording process of the latest album, on how different it was from 'Silicon Messiah' although he thought that the 2000-release had "all the bits" and was "perfect". This, therefore, clearly shows a progression in the making of an album for him.
Anyway, he absolutely loves metal and singing it, although he admits not being "the best singer in the world".
He learned a lot with Steve Harris, Dave Murray and others and all these experiences come to play after having worked with such talented people.
Were there limitations of lyrics in Maiden ? No, he reminds, there were no restrictions of lyric writing in Iron Maiden, you could write anything that you wished as long as the music was good.
On the current Iron Maiden, he says that 'Dance of Death' is good but that he preferred 'Brave New World'. He likes 'No More Lies' but, basically, he liked more songs on 'Brave New World'.
To the interviewer asking him how he feels about Bruce Dickinson's rendition of his Maiden tunes, he says that he makes a "good job".
Would he consider singing for another big band ? If the offer in terms of money is interesting, why not, but he doubts it, since he's going somewhere with his own band. Plus, his Maiden experience was a once in a lifetime opportunity. Prior to enter the band, he was a big fan of Iron Maiden, he loved the music. Thus, he loved being in the band. He adds that one must love the music to get through it, and that was always his case, either in Maiden or in his current band.
Interestingly, he states that Sanctuary Records used to put obstacles to B L A Z E, so that it didn't enter in competition with Maiden. For instance, the record company would put a same week release as Iron Maiden.
But with 'Blood & Belief' it's different. Blaze thinks that it's their first chance to "step out of the shadow of Iron Maiden", a chance to "show what they do".
Does he think that he will always be labelled as the ex-Iron Maiden singer ? It seems that some people in the UK just even know him as the ex-singer of Wolfsbane… so clearly some people don't know him as the ex-Maiden singer.
But it's clearly a long path to be just known as "Blaze Bayley, the singer".

Thanks for transcribing that interview it sounds interesting
thanks again thesaint!
Interesting. So Blaze's lack of success is just Sanctuary's fault?
It's an interesting case. I mean, releasing an album from a former member the same week as the main band: good or bad marketing ?
1) Bad case: the album will be completely overshadowed by the Maiden one and people would ignore Blaze. If one knows about it, he might only buy one album (for money reasons) and hence the Maiden one and not Blaze.
2) Good case: releasing an album at the same time might give Blaze free PR and more awarness than usual, since many mainstream music articles that would normally totally ignore Blaze would about Maiden and could add that a former member is also releasing an album. Shops might even put the two side to side to create even more awarness.
I don't know. Hard to tell. Is B&B really selling better now that it's not coming from Sanctuary ? I doubt it.
But the heavy work should have been done as the first Blaze album was released, because that was by then that some press might have been interested by an former bandmate album, less now sadly.
So there Sanctuary might have been at fault.
Cheers
Nice one. very interesting
