FFAF Talk About Winning Over Maiden Fans

on July 31, 2004 @ 07:48

Lead singer Matt Davies and guitarist Darren Smith of the Welsh post-hardcore outfit Funeral For A Friend recently spoke to Canada's Chart Attack about the experience of opening for Iron Miaden on tour in Europe.

"There were times when those hardcore Maiden fans couldn't give a fuck what we were doing," Darren admitted. "The first show we were shitting ourselves because the first two songs we played we were getting serious 'Maiden' chants. After that we realized this how it’s going to be for the whole fucking tour so after that we just went out and just played and looked past all the people chanting and giving us the finger. Touring with Maiden seeing them play every night, we definitely learned a lot."

"We knew whatever we do, if we managed to convince five people in the audience to like us then that was a job well done," added Matt. "After the first few shows we buckled down and just played for ourselves and when we do that, that's when we’re at our best. When we did that, we weren't booed off and I think people were semi-interested in us."

I appreciate that attitude, instead of going against the crowd they went on just playing. That's the right attitude!

They really took it well at the Dublin gig.

Everybody started chanting "Maiden, Maiden" after FFaF's first song so the band joined in too.

I haven't heard much of their songs yet, but what I did hear I didn't think was so bad. I think I would have liked to have heard them live - with any luck they get a bit better there.

I quite liked FFAF! I thought that they were fairly good. My friend went to the Maiden Concert WANTING to see them and i wasnt bothered. But when they had finished i liked them and he hated them because they were shit live. But when your opening for Giants, your not going to be running round the stage ETC are ya! duckie.gif

FFAF are actually a local band for me, so I was quite excited about seeing them with maiden. At the end of the day, Bruce is a fan, so why do some maiden fans boo them like no1 on the earth gives a shit about them?
