New Brandy Album Contains Maiden Sample

Posted by The Saint on June 29, 2004 @ 19:20

How will fans react ? Brandy's newest album, 'Afrodisiac' contains a Maiden sample !

As states the New York Times, *"she worked with the eccentric (and brilliant) producer Timbaland on 9 of the 15 songs here, and most of them are great, from the Iron Maiden-sampling ballad, "I Tried," to the calisthenic club track "Turn It Up" *(source)

And yes, it's very clear: after 15 seconds into the 'I Tried' song comes a loop of the intro guitar & bass line from 'The Clansman' out of the 1998 'Virtual XI' album.

After reading some forums, talks are all about this song and how it's a favorite on the album.

Rumor has it that it will become a single...

How can those 2 'kin pop rappers take such an epic, classic hit by maiden and put in their damn song?!? Does Steve know about this? I don't think he'll be so glad to hear about this.

I am only surprised that it didn't happen before...

All great bands have had one of their melodies sample re-used.

[Iron Maiden go R N B](http://www.metaluk.com/news/displayNews.cfm?iNewsArticleID=7285)

Fun title that metaluk.com has done...

Anyway, the point is: I'm now not sure of the song's title. 'I tried' might have been the draft title and the one previewed on radio. It could be actually called 'Cool (thought I'd be)'.

Anyway, no one cared to mention us as the first one to point out this fact.

Odds are that Steve not only knows about it, but that he's getting paid for it. Major artists like Brandy don't steal - they pay royalties for their samples. If Brandy had used the sample without paying the publisher (Sanctuary Music), then she'd be leaving herself open to a huge lawsuit.

My understanding of music law indicates that Steve has no option in the matter; anyone can sample Maiden without official permission, as long as they fork over the money for it.

While I'm not a fan of Brandy's music, I don't see why you folks are so upset about this. It seems to me like it ought to be seen as a compliment to Maiden. Presumably, Brandy would want her samples to sound good, right? So she is in effect saying what we all know: "Iron Maiden makes good music". What's wrong with that?

Nothing wrong for my point of view.

Anyway, Maiden fans have always been schizophrenic: on one side, proud to be loving a band that has in own 'niche' and on the other side, bragging about the millions of albums sold and the influence Maiden had.

So, when Maiden is compared to Metallica, it's better because of the quality and because of the restricted audience (a "true" audience), but when compared to Great White, it crushes them in album sales.

On one side, every fan would wish a number 1 charting album and huge sales, but at the other side, Maiden shouldn't be fashionable for their music isn't trendy.

I'm stuck in there, too, don't worry

Cheers

The fact is that this shit gonna play on radio and become famous and the clansman NEVER play on radio and never earn a lot of cash.

Good points SMX, **Newsmaster: The Saint**! Basically, somewhere on that album the names "Iron Maiden" and "Steve Harris" will be mentioned. If not, never fear: Rod and co. will be after Brandy. That alone would be more press than Maiden's had since Nicko hammered that guy with his car. Maybe even more than that.

Look at it this way

I am 30 year old black man from the Bronx into Rap, R&B and some Pop Music as long as it sounds good to my ear. The only think i ever knew about Iron Maiden was the art i use to glance at, (not even Look at) when i was going to school.

now after this Brandy song that Timbaland sampled from the Clansman, i know who Derrick Riggs is, i know who Eddie(head) is, i even know that Bruce left and came back and what a Iron Maiden is.

The whole point to this is that sample that was used may draw some more fans that may have never even known who Iron Maiden was, like myself. This is really not a bad thing. I even had to catch up on Coldplay even thouogh i remember always turning the channel when one of their videos was one.

Trust me, its a good thing!!

This is a good example. Thanks for sharing !

I have some friends that are into hip hop only, but they NEVER miss a Maiden show when they're around.
