Slayer Guitarist Tells How Maiden Started It All

on August 12, 2004 @ 18:36

In a recent interview by KNAC.com, Slayer Guitarist Jeff Hanneman tells how Maiden songs were the first that Kerry King and him jammed on when they first met, even if punk was starting to be a new favorite genre for both of them:

"Kerry and I met (...) Me and Kerry got to talking, and he and I picked up a guitar and we started playing with a drummer after the tryout session was over. We were playing Priest and Maiden songs with a drummer, and so Kerry and I started talking after that and Kerry was like, “Why don’t we start our OWN band?” [Laughs] and I was like, “…Fuck yeah!” [Laughs]

(...) the thing that tied me and Kerry together was that I was just getting out of stuff like Maiden and Priest, Zeppelin -- whatever, and I was getting into punk. But I still knew all the Priest and Maiden stuff, so we started jamming with stuff like that. And then I started getting the guys into punk, and that’s how we got our speed and got more aggressive.
