2. Dave Grohl - Nirvana

I didn't look any further, I was sure this would be one more crappy list

I think we all say the same thing, what is that man's name doing there?!

yeah dave grohl on that list = wtf? it seems hard for any publication to make a sensible "best of" list these days, but then again i guess there would be no list unanimously considered as "good" since these lists are always subject for debate. anywho, i also think dave lombardo should have been lower down in the list. i mean hes good, but not THAT good. his beats sound pretty repetitive (ultra fast double bass drumming hitting the snare every half a second and then throwing some crash symbols in there...for the most part)...but i guess thats what give slayer their unique thrashy sound. still lombardo shouldnt be that high.

ever heard any of his work outside of Slayer? Please do, and reconsider. Dave Grohl isn't a bad drummer, pretty good actually, but nowhere near no. 2 in the world. My "WTF" on that list would be Chad Smith

Actually, Chad Smith is an amazing drummer, especially live. I'm not saying he deserves the #5 spot, but he's definitely in the top 20.

The biggest things I disagree with are:

a - Dave Grohl. I think he's a good drummer, but he's not #2, or even top 20 material. And remember, this is coming from the only person on this forum who has consistently defended Nirvana against all you metalheads.

b - Phil Collins at #14. He should be much higher, maybe even top 5. Listen to his drumming from the early 70s with the young version of Genesis - it's scary good.

c - There are some guys on this list (Ginger Baker, Mitch Mitchell) who got onto these types of lists back in the late 60s and never left. They're good, but there have been many superior drummers since. I don't understand why Mitchell is still in the top 10.

This is the worst list ever.

Neil Peart - Rush
Nicko McBrain - Iron Maiden

1.They should be at the very top.
2. Rush and Maiden aren't classic rock, they are metal.

Rush is not at all metal. They've done some hard rock in their time, but they are definitely not metal.

Even if they were metal: who says metal bands can't be considered under the classic rock umbrella? Metal is just a sub-genre of rock.

Neil Peart is probably the world's best drummer.

I have a encyclopedia of heavy metal it has maiden, rush, and many other in it.

Fair enough; I can understand that in compiling an encyclopedia of heavy metal, an author might include Rush. They have done a lot of hard rock in their time, and an encyclopedia is supposed to be a comprehensive resource. I can even understand how some persons might consider Rush to be metal, though I think the number of such persons would be a tiny fragment of all metal fans. Most people would not consider Rush to be metal.

Let me ask you a question, MG: are you really familiar with Rush's music? I mean more than just the greatest hits. Have you listened to all their albums?

If your answer is "yes" and you still think they're metal, then I respect your opinion - though I still strongly disagree.

If your answer is "no":
a. Check out some Rush albums. It's great music.
b. Take it from someone who has been a big Rush fan for over 20 years: when you look at their entire repertoire, not just the hard rock stuff, they are not metal. I'll admit some of their songs come close to being metal, but in my opinion it's not quite there.

John Bonham was highly inventive and very skilled. I completely agree with his being on top of this list, though I wouldn't complain if Peart were listed at #1. Take a close listen to Bonham's work on albums like *Houses Of The Holy* or *Physical Graffiti*. It may sound superficially like he's just keeping a beat, but the artistry of his beats is brilliant. And don't forget that Bonham's drum intro to "When The Levee Breaks" is the most sampled and imitated drum intro in all of rock music.

I have posted about Dave Grohl earlier in this thread.

Keith Moon is (or was) wild percussionistic fury personified. If a person only listens casually to his work, it may seem that all he did was solo wildly through all his songs. For a long time, that's what I thought. But eventually I paid closer attention to what he was playing. He was rarely out of time, and used his drums as a vehicle for intensifying the emotions of a song.

Neil Peart is the most technically talented drummer who's ever walked the earth. He is really a complete percussionist, more so than any other person on this list. Almost any Rush album is ample evidence of this, but the best Peart drumming I know of is his drum solo from the *Rush In Rio* DVD. That solo is simply the most amazing drum performance I know of, bar none.

So what are those 3 doing at the top? They're the best ever in two senses:
a. Sheer skill and artistry.
b. Most rock drummers have been influenced by at least one of those three.

He's had his moments, but overall he's average at best.

^^agreed!

neil peart should def. be in the top 5! he kicks ass!
mike portnoy is good, but not in the classic rock category..dream theater is progressive metal...kind of the opposite of classic rock in rock terms
and chad smith is so good! i agree with them on him being on there

well maybe i should check out lombardo's other stuff, but his drumming for slayer was never really WAY too impressive for me.
