Iron Maiden Online Club Update

on March 23, 2006 @ 02:04

After our first week of knuckling down and beginning to cut basic tracks, we had a very interesting second week. We've cut 10 long songs for the new album, as well as four songs for B sides, which show quite an interesting side to the band. Don't worry, there's nothing like the "interesting-or-maybe-not" B sides which were all that were left over for the Dance of Death singles. These are great cover versions with a terrific and humourous spirit!

Anyhoo, the spirit in the band is as high as I've ever seen. Wing Commander Biggles (as I call Bruce) is running around like a chicken with it's head cut off, singing every take live, like it was his last - 'Arry, or Steve is sounding better than I've ever heard since I began producing the band, galloping along very strongly - and the material is definitely the "groovingest" in a decade. The songs are very progressive, with catchy choruses and I have to confess to being VERY optimistic about the material.

Oh God! 10 LONG songs. Very "progressive". The "grooviest" album in a decade? This is sounding like everything I hate :S

Sounds good. "Ten LONG tracks" and "PROGRESSIVENESS" sound like my favourite kind of thing from Maiden. Plus, I've already heard, a little to my dismay, that one of the apparent four B-sides will be a cover of a Floyd track, but does anybody know what the others will be? Nicko JR

If the cover they are doing is a Floyd song and there is female vocals (as rumoured), then maybe there is credence in it all. ;)

if its progressive and groovy just like SSOASS in 1988 (not nowadays) it could be another milestone, another commercial success, another life?

VOICE OF EDDIE here: Let me tell you a story to chill the bones . . . of a thing that I saw . . . OH NO! Not more progressive! and GROOVY too! GANGLAND AND GENGHIS KHAN FOREVER ! ! ! ! UP THE IRONS ! !

This doesn't sound good guys.Noone can handle 10 - 7 minute(to say the least ) tracks.
It is almost sure that the album will be arouund 65 minutes. This could be even worse that BNW.Too bad.

Could anyone bare an album 70 minutes long?Like having 10 Paschendales.! or 2 long ones is OK.NO MORE THAN THAT

'Long songs' doesn't necessarily mean Dream of Mirrors or Sign of the Cross boredom. It's just a case of wait and see/hear, but I doubt Mr Harris is still capable of writing long but dynamic songs like Hallowed Be Thy Name or Caught Somewhere in Time. The betting is that this listener will spin the disc a few times, relegate it to the shelf in dismay and put on Piece of Mind to remind him of the glory days when Maiden were a metal band. Do the fans celebrating the prospect of more lumbering and boring Harris epics actually enjoy the real classics like Aces High or The Trooper? Either track is better than all the 1990s and 2000s proggy efforts combined.

personally i like the long(ish) progressive stuff, and i love the last two albums. i dont think long will mean 9-10 mins, probs 6 or seven. sounding good to my ears already

Maybe "10 long songs" simply means 10 completes songs and not parts of songs. In this case, this could only be short songs, which would be amazing !
anyway, i like BNW and DOD. Up the IRONS !

As I've said elsewhere, I enjoy both the short songs and the long prog anthems. The longer ones, however, tend to draw me in a lot more than the shorter ones. For example: I love Sanctuary, Invaders, Futureal and Wildest Dreams, but much more often you will hear Sing Of The Cross, Don't Look To The Eyes Of A Stranger, Ghost Of The Nav, The Thin Line, DOD and Paschendale blaring from my room much more often. As an avid drummer I love all the time changes - it keeps you on your toes (or technically on your bum). When the CAaveman talks about "Groove", I'm assuming he means stuff like Wrathchild,Innocent Exile and the instrumental section of FOTD. If the new album contains a mixture of these elements then I'll be laughing! Nicko JR

Yea, was just gonna say. It's the account of one person. We obviously can't tell what he'd consider "groovy" or "proggy"... I trust it'll be something rather good. Up the irons!
